3 Basic Principles in Reiki

Reiki is a Holistic Healing practice -including mind-body-emotional and spiritual healing.  It is all encompassing, giving the body space and a chance to heal, thereby activating it’s own healing mechanisms.

Here are a 3 basic principles Reiki is based upon:

Compassion is an essential element in this healing modality.  If you are someone who is sensitive to others needs and to your environment this may be an excellent technique for you.  Reiki helps us channel our compassionate nature in a way that is productive and does not “drain” ourselves.  By accessing the universal life force that is all around us we are fed constantly.  This universal energy source is like an endless river that we can access if we are feeling depleted in any way.  This sense is very empowering and can be accessed at any time.

Intention is having a purpose of an outcome.   When we begin a project or any task with a clear intention that task will be easier to complete.  With more focus on the outcome it will be more effortless and focused as we move through the steps of achieving our goals.  Intention in Reiki healing clarifies and creates a positive effectiveness to the work and any goal.  For example:  a job interview, snow shoveling or healing ourselves.

Gratitude, also a major principle of Reiki healing.  In life there is grace.  If we are caught up in greed and desire we fail to recognize grace.  We fail to have gratitude. Focus on what we want and not what we have leaves us constantly hungry and never satisfied.  We have the ability to be fed all the time in our lives by this connection to source energy.  It is our choice, like a light switch to turn it on or to leave it off.  Noticing what we are grateful for creates an immediate shift in our perspective and allows us to be a positive vessel in which the Reiki Healing can flow easily.

The Short Story of Reiki

Reiki was founded by a man named Mikao Usui, born in Japan in 1865. Usui was a spiritual man and practicing Buddhist who avidly studied many different philosophies, as well as history, medicine and psychology. He was married and had two children. According to his memorial stone, around the year 1922 Usui underwent a 21-day meditation and fast on Mount Kurama where Reiki energy was revealed to him.

He discovered that he had the ability to connect with healing energy for himself and others.  Returning home, he established the Usui Reiki Healing Society. He spent the next few years offering Reiki healings to the public, traveling and speaking. People came from all over the country to receive treatments from Usui, and he initiated over 2000 students to the practice of Reiki. He treated victims of the 1923 Tokyo earthquake and fire that affected hundreds of thousands of people. Mikao Usui died in 1926 at age 62.

Among Usui’s Reiki Master students was a man named Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval captain and medical doctor. After Usui’s death, Dr. Hayashi established his own Reiki clinic and school, teaching many students and developing a healing guide and handbook. His most notable student was a Hawaiian woman of Japanese origin, Hawayo Takata. She is responsible for introducing Reiki to the West. She received her Reiki training in Japan then returned to Hawaii to open her own practice. She actively taught and practiced Reiki in Hawaii and on the mainland for over forty years. Upon her death in 1980, she had trained 22 Master students who have carried on her legacy.

Today, Reiki is worldwide phenomenon, practiced by people of many cultures and many faiths. The practice of Reiki since Usui’s time has evolved to include different branches and styles of practice. Reiki is widely becoming recognized as a viable complementary healing technique and is being integrated into conventional medical practices. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the government's lead agency for scientific research on diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products, considers Reiki a type of energy medicine and is among those funding research into Reiki.

Believe in Reiki?

There are many stories of people experiencing healing from Reiki. It could be a general sense of well-being, a lowering of high blood pressure, healing of digestive issues, a reduction in stress level or it could be healing of pain and discomforts in a specific area of the body. How can energy work help such issues? It is valid to be discerning regarding healing work. What is it to experience the healing from Reiki and why are some sessions more profound and some more subtle? Does faith play a role in having a placebo effect in healing Reiki? Being critical makes a better believer or a better receiver!

How healing Reiki works
From a scientific perspective healing modalities such as Reiki can actually stimulate a parasympathetic nervous response in the body. The parasympathetic response is the nervous system’s rest and digest mode of response. These include digestive, endocrine, respiratory systems as well as others. Helping aid these responses in the body create an optimal immune system response when dealing with any kind of ailment. When we have better rest and better digestion the entire body is more able to heal itself.

Healing Reiki energy works with what is known as the subtle energy system of the body. This can also be referred to as the auric field. The Chakra system is part of this auric field. The chakras are wheels of energy that are said to correspond with different feelings, states of being, colors and much more with the body. Because Reiki effects this subtle energetic body, the healing which occurs in it can at times be imperceptible to us. We may not feel the healing Reiki energy till days or weeks after a session. It is not always the case however. Generally there is at least some shift felt on the part of the receiver even if it is simply being more relaxed.

Our minds and intention have a great deal with the effect that a healing Reiki session has on us. If we go into it with a doubtful and too critical mindset we are blocking off the bodies (and spirits) ability to let go and surrender into the process of healing Reiki. A principle in healing Reiki energy is that it will not work if the recipient is not willing to receive it. When our mind is stuck in a suspicious mode and not in an open mode we are blocking the energy with our negative thoughts. Discernment is important as it protects us. If we are in the hands of an intelligent and well intentioned person there is nothing to fear. We are our own first healer. Why not make it easier on our bodies systems and let it work? Even if one is able to receive the rest and relaxation needed in our stressful lives through healing Reiki, it is a gift and will eventually help in strengthening the bodies immune system responses.

Whether it is a placebo effect or faith who cares?
